A Flayed Knight

Inspiration & Lore

Inspiration

Feast your eyes on a Flayed Knight, a monster I designed in 2020.

This horror from a far-off place is a warrior with spinning blades and tentacles that can sense your fear.

In 2020 I started DMing a campaign for D&D, and since it has continued to be a significant source of inspiration for my artwork. I wanted this design to feel like it belonged in the "Old Cthulu texts." I'm excited to pit these warriors against my players.

Lore

The Flayed were beasts. They walked like us, but they fought like animals. They were cruel. They gave no quarter and took no prisoners. Make no mistake, though—they took slaves. They looked at us the way we look at the small creatures that scurry across the ground, but they never accepted surrender.

They scorched every land they conquered. They cared only for what our world could give them: another endlessly mineable resource.

The Flayed hunted our people relentlessly. The small pockets of refugees would sing songs of their horrific deeds as a warning—a warning to never forget, to never let the passage of time erase the horrors they inflicted upon our people.

Now I find myself in this new home, this new world, and I know they left their mark on this place. I can feel their presence. Even though they are long gone, their identifiably deep irradiated scars remain.

I won't stop searching.

I have to know how these people stop them.
